GREENWICH VILLAGE APARTMENT - 2015

This apartment did not need much in terms of layout changes - this postwar two bedroom was a prime example of having “good bones”. But what it didn’t have was any updates since the early 1960s. Every surface, appliance, and fixture was in “estate condition” - paint and tiles were peeling away from he walls and ceiling, appliances and plumbing fixtures were decrepit and non-functional, and most of the lights and outlets would spark.

Our goal was to revitalize this wonderful home, keeping the general layout of two king-sized bedrooms, and a large living room, while updating the existing tiny kitchen and bathrooms, and adding storage. The kitchen was opened up and extended into the former dining alcove, with a counter run along the windows and a large island created around a building column. The oversized and somewhat functionless foyer was redesigned as a dimming area with a coffered ceiling. The guest bedroom doubles as a home office, with the desk placed at the window facing the gothic spire of Grace Church across the street. The primary bedroom was expanded to include the many small closets which were united into two walk-ins and both baths were also enlarged. In collaboration with Maya Parkhani Interior Design built-ins were designed and furnishings selected to give the home a glamorous mid-century vibe that compliments the 1960s characteristics of this classic white-brick apartment building.
